yes diesel and gasser zf are different.bellhousings are different between the 2.you should be able to find a donor truck for 2000.00 or less though.i know throw the junkyard the zf was about 1500.00 for my truck.wich is why im glad we got a parts truck in.all i had to find was the correct clutch pedals, and hydraulic setup and front half of my drive shaft.

those prices on trucks dont exist around here. they are all 2500 plus. If i found a regular cab gas or diesel that would make it best since my truck is a regular cab as well correct?

if you look in the right places you will find them for under 2,000.00.the guys renting a spot next to us just bought an 88 f450 2 car carrier,7.3,5 speed for 1000.00.a friend of ours was gonna buy it for 500.00.he went to get the money and go back and pay for it but the guy next door was there loading up.the motor runs beautiful, shifts perfect.

gasser wont fit.has to come out of a diesel.cab doesnt matter unless you have a 1 piece drive shaft.if you have a 2 piece with center support bearing you can get the front shaft out of any size cab.a gasser will most likely have a 1 piece shaft.you will also need the 5 speed crossmember as well as the auto one is different.

i need a 4x4 version though.

so what if i got the diesel zf seperatly and got a donor truck say a f150 whatever as long as it was a zf five speed the rest of the pedals and the clutch arm etc should work fine correct?

Or will only the stuff from an f250 or better work?

the pedals will work but the master and slave cylinder wont.those need to be from an f250-f450.look around for an f450(aka fsuperduty)in the same body style as your truck.they use a 4x4 tranny in them and will have everything you need.you can usually find them cheap as a cab and chassis.i can get one now,97 fsuperduty,PSD,5 speed for 1500.00.i dont have the money or id have it.

what, they use a 4x4 tranny?

then they just have the funky driveline brake on it?

How do you resolve that do you just take that off and bolt it to the transfer case?

no fair 1500 bucks!

just pop the ebrake off of it and bolt the transfer case right onto it like you would on your tranny.DO NOT throw the ebrake away if you get a superduty!!!that thing 1200.00 new from ford and will easily sell all day long for 4-500.00 on ebay!!!the rear end is worth 1500.00 and will sell all day long for 7-800.00.the front axle if the king pins are good is worth about 700.00 and will easily sell for 300.00.you can make most if not all of your money back if you get a super duty and part it out.

i forgot that the only part you will need to find is the right length driveshaft out of an f250-f350.

so all i have to do is remove that funky parking brake assm and bolt it up huh.

Are the five speed f-superdutys the same tranny wether its gas or diesel?

Or do i need a diesel f superduty for the correct spline count etc?

i figured so.

what about swapping a five speed. Here are my known options so far. the cost doesnt seem to outweigh, unless i could find a cheap donor truck.

1. nv4500
2. zf five
3. zf six
4. mazda m5r2

yup pop the ebrake off and bolt the transfercase to the tranny and sell the ebrake.if i had a camara id take a picture of one im in the process of doing as we type.superduty zf5 into a 4x4 f350.the zf that i put in my superduty came out of an 87 f250 4x4.the zf HAS to come from a diesel only.gassers have a smaller bell housing bolt pattern than the diesel.
