Moving right along the shakeout phase, now. The new problem of the week is that the truck decided that it didn’t like the fuel block off plate gasket. Sprang a steady leak that new gaskets, larger washers, and even a new block off plates haven’t solved.

I haven’t tried dual layering the gaskets, I doubt that would seal.

I will be trying black permatex gasket maker tomorrow and see if it works on Sunday.

Should I combine the permatex with a gasket or run it without the gasket?

I do a very light coating of black gasket maker on my diff cover gasket, and since the F-Super Duty trucks have such low mile diff oil changes, that’s something that I will get to do plenty…

I also did this to the block off plate gasket on my 86

No leaks

Before you go any farther, does your block off plate(s) fit correctly? I know that some or most of them seem like they fit, but they actually touch part of the block which doesn't let then fit tightly against the machined surface. If this is the case, you'll need to remove a little bit of material. I think it's around the top of the plate.

I found a diesel ZF5 case trans case that has “the middle gears”, all in unknown condition that the gentleman is willing to trade an RPM sensor for.

I’m thinking of taking him up on the offer but there’s a lot of research that I need to do on what else would be needed to complete this ZF5 unit.

At this moment I have two T19 spares pulled from junkyard trucks (unknown condition) with 2 diesel bell housings + the brake pedal assembly, trans mount, + misc, and the RPM gauge cluster.

May have found potential buyer for one of the T19 diesel bellhousing at $260 shipped.

If he falls through, then the offer applies here.

is there a turbo solution out there that preserves the ease of maintenance that the top of N/A motors have? Not even considering banks (any generation) plus they can’t be rebuilt as easily.

Theres the tried and true intercooled R&D idi turbo kit for about $5000 shipped. It uses a stock ford turbo with some goodies upgraded, not all that sure what.

Then Theres the hypermax pulse turbo kit for about $3000 shipped. Not as good as R&D but has some decent top-of-the-engine access, *so I’ve read.*

And then there’s the remote turbo mounting solution. I don’t have a welder *yet* and I know that there is custom piping that needs to be made for a remote mounted turbo to work. But im willing to put in the time and effort into figuring out a good solution.

Do you have any advice here?

I bought the ZF5 from the guy. Here are some photos. Still needs some stuff, not 100% sure what all it needs.

I have two of their kits on trucks. I have worked on trucks with 088 and 093 kits, and first gen banks. Haven’t been around Banks Sidewinder or R&D kits, but I can tell you that while the Hypermax kits themselves aren’t the easiest to install, they aren’t too bad, and they do preserve the ease of repair and maintenance that the other kits certainly do not in my opinion… and in my experience their systems are very reliable and simple, and despite the fairly long uppipes they spool and pull very well. They are very loud, your engine will develop a new kind of howling, hearty, dieselly growl unlike anything. Really, unlike anything. The turbos seem to make more of a screaming noise than a whistling noise. I would recommend their cowl induction and exhaust, they are after all designed for use with their turbo kits.

I have replaced lifters without removing anything turbo related but the intake hat and turbo drain, and had no real difficulty with it.

R&D and Hypermax are the only kit mfgs that make intercooler systems for their kits… if that’s something you are interested in. Hypermax also makes an intercooler kit for the ATS 093/Ford factory turbo, as well as an exhaust system.

If you get one, don’t turn up the pump as much as the instructions say. Do like 2 1/2 flats tops. Unless you like EGTs and crazy smoke. My 86 extended cab long bed (box bed so less than 7000 lbs) will burn the tires off and fly away if you want it to. It’s turned up a little more than it should be, but it does run good. Reminds me that I haven’t driven that truck in a while, I started it and drove around the farm after putting it back together a few weeks ago, but that’s all… ah well.
