That's what I first thoughtThat almost looks like the locating dowell for the injection pump
Ah! I bet you're right. The front cover was off of the engine years ago, so it would have been disturbed. I'll compare with a parts engineMaybe a locating pin for the front or rear cover plate? Otherwise, I'm out of guesses.
I don't remember exactly the killer Cummins pin is, but I don't think this could happen to an IDI. I think it would go to the bottom of the sump and stay there. I don't think that it could be picked up into the oil pump.Ever heard of killer dowel pin for a 12 valve Cummins? Wonder if a disturbed cover can cause something similar on these engines, falling below etc.
Could have been worse if that’s the case
It's ferrous, but doesn't appear to be magnetic. I will check that again to be sureIs it magnetic? Is it maybe broken off of your drain plug?
The killer dowel pin can do one of two things, fall down into the oil pan, or the timing gears. They cannot get picked up by the sump as the sump has a screenI don't remember exactly the killer Cummins pin is, but I don't think this could happen to an IDI. All things considered I think you’re doing pretty good at it.I believe that it looks supiciously like the famous 'nibbling pin'...
If you can somehow locate the 'wobbling shaft'...you will see where it fits in....
Stuff like that I put in the ashtray...and look at it every now and again...
otherwise it will collect in the spare change tray...
Sorry guys....could not help myself...@jesus freak is not showing up lately so I am trying to fill in...and probably doing a poor job of it...
So now I know that this can't happen to a IDI. The Cummins killer is internal, or at least under a cover so it's not exposed internally. It can fall out while the engine's running. The ones on the IDI are exposed externally and can only fall into the oil pan when the engine cover (front or rear) is removed. Either way, the engine's not running. The killer dowel pin can do one of two things, fall down into the oil pan, or the timing gears. They cannot get picked up by the sump as the sump has a screen
