My '89 non-turbo 7.3 idi just doesn't have enough pull to haul my loaded gooseneck; what's best; add a turbo (which brand) or replace the engine with a later model? Do the newer engines have more hp than the old 7.3? I really like the 7.3.

If it's automatic, change to a manual.
Axle ratio makes a difference.
You can turn up the injection pump, but things can get toasty, so a pyrometer should be part of that mod.
If you can score the turbo and jewelry off a tired or scattered IDI for a few hundred bucks... then I'd say go for it.

used they can be found for under $1000 usually and help pulling power tremendously

I have a turbo set up I’d sell for $550. The turbo should be rebuilt for safe measure though
