Oil pressure delay

I always had a delay with pressure on mechanical gauge. I assumed it was because it was plumbed in on the very top of the turbo feed so it was the literal last place to get oil after sitting and draining down. Delay was probably 3-5 seconds after it first fired.

I also have a delay but mine is in the galley ports and should get pressure right away. Trouble is it's a cheapo mechanical and sticks until it sees 20psi. That only scares the poop outta me every other time I turn it on...

I'll probably start mine today because I need to use the crane (electric)...so I'll watch it closer than usual and report back.

My oil line is plumbed into the block near the oil filter...so...it should be pretty quick...and...I started it two days ago to use the crane then, too...so...the crank time should be pretty short.

According to my guage...(not sure what brand but it looks pretty decent) I usually hit a shade over 40 PSI and it stays there...I don't remember what the pressure may have dropped to burning hot at idle...(been a while since I towed with it) but nothing alarmed me...and yes, I was looking at the guage pretty regular...

I have 15W40 in it right now(probably the best 'budget' oil I could get at (shudder) ...---mart)...and a decent brand oil filter from rock auto...either wix or FoMoCo...original style...

And...if I can get a filter with an anti-drainback valve...I will use it because I want it...not because I don't 'need' it...

This is America...and it is not a question of 'need'...

Update; Warm this morning and engine fired up immediately...

Oil pressure guage needle started moving during "One Mississippi..."

It does not 'pop' to 40+ PSI...more like "Hey, Hey, Hey...Outta My Way..."

Stayed at 40+ the whole time it was running to warm up....

I am sure that there is air in the line...I never bled the air out when I snugged the ferrule up to keep it from leaking...

That is the way it always has been and the engine runs fine...no smoke and exhaust note seems ok.

I should check the timing...I'll get to it...

That sounds right to me. The oil pressure doesn't go from 0 to 40 PSI instantly. It does go fairly quickly though.

This also sounds perfectly normal to me.

I replaced the line to the gauge with a 4an stainless braided one and that seemed to fix it.

Probably some dirt got stuck in the old 1/8” copper tube I had.

My pressure is actually higher now than before and responds immediately to throttle.

Pressure is ~ 48 psi cold idle.

Hot idle is around 25 psi. Cruising is back up to 45 psi.

So, again, after letting my truck sit for 5 days, when I went to start it took about 10 seconds for oil pressure to show. I let it sit overnight and the next day same thing happened.

I changed the oil filter and that fixed the issue again. Now it takes 1-2 seconds. But I’m only 1000 miles since my last oil and filter change.

Anyone else have issues like this? I’m wondering if since I’m running a 110cc pump the hotter EGTs are causing my oil to get sludgey and clog the filter quicker than normal.

I’m thinking about switching to a synthetic oil. I’ve been using just regular Rotella T4 15W-40, but I might try and switch to a synthetic 5W-40.

Any of you guys running a synthetic oil?

Do an oil analysis. Is your oil level going up?

I’ve ran T4, T6 (full synth), cheap conventionals, up to 130cc pumps on my engines. No delay. I don’t think your issue is oil or pump.

I was just at napa discussing this with them a week ago, it depends on which store you are at. Some are, some aren't.

Old stock vs new they received, maybe.

The IDI budget oil filter I ordered last fall ended up being an old USA made ProSelect instead of the new Chinese made Proformer. Same part number of 21742

The coolant test strips were almost a year past expiration. So Napa has a ton of old stock sitting around they can't sell very fast.

Thats not what they had said. It was more of a supply chain issue. What's new with today's world, am I right?

Aside from those, the only thing I can think of is that the pump is losing prime some how. But then I don’t get why changing the filter seems to fix it
