Oil pressure delay

I’ve noticed recently that if I let my truck sit a couple days it takes like 10 seconds for it to build oil pressure on a cold start.

I’m wondering if it has to do with the change in the oils viscosity with the hot weather lately.

I previously remember the gauge immediately slowly climb up when I’d start it.

Now it sits at zero for about 10 seconds (which seems like an eternity), and then the needle instantly flicks up to 50psi mechanical gauge), which it would normally slowly climb up to before.

Something to worry about or nah? Does anyone run prelude pumps on these trucks?

I have one question...does the line you use to get oil pressure to the guage have any air in it...?

If yes...then I would bleed the air first and then re-test...

If no...then look for a reason for the oil system to bleed down...

What kind of oil are you running and what kind of filter...?

Maybe the gauge isn't working properly?

Perhaps the oil line to the gauge has some dirt that's causing it to be delayed?

Dang, mine takes about 1 or to mississippis and that feels like a long time. This is an aftermarket gauge we're talking right?

It’s an aftermarket auto meter gauge. It could be something funky with the gauge I guess, but air in the line shouldn’t matter, you’d still have pressure in the line.

I’ll take a video later maybe so you can see what I’m talking about.

That definitely sounds too long. Premature rod and crank bearing wear can occur if you keep having actual delayed oil pressure.
I assume you tapped your oil pressure gauge at the back of the block where the factory gauge goes?

Having an oil filter with a bad anti flowback valve can cause it too. Maybe try swapping the oil filter.

Yes, top of the back of the block is where the gauge is plumbed into.

That’s a good idea about the filter too. I’ll try changing the filter since I’m due for an oil change anyway and see if that makes a difference.

@Nero looks like oil and filter change fixed the problem. I cut open the old filter and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.

I guess maybe the filter was restricted and that was causing the delay.

But I don’t see any mechanism on the FL-1995A filter for anti-drain back. And the NAPA gold filter I put on didn’t have one either.

Anybody aware of a filter that fits these trucks that has that feature?

Why would you need anti-drain back? The filter is lower than the mount it screws too, correct?

You don’t, I was thinking maybe it would hold oil in the galleys above it but that stuff would drain out anyway. I guess the anti drain back is just to keep the filter full in horizontal positions etc

I would try another known working mechanical gauge before I would be thinking about the oil filter being the problem

I just ordered another one. Funny, after changing the oil and filling up the filter before installing, I had oil pressure immediately on the first fire up.

Now a few hours later I had another delay, maybe like 3 seconds this time when starting up.

I’m gonna hook a second gauge up to verify if this one is working right. If it is then maybe I do have a drain back issue??

When I assembled the motor, I didn’t use a gasket between the block and oil pump. Only a gasket for the suction side came with the reseal kit if I remember right…

Someone more knowledgeable about these motors may know if I was supposed to use a gasket between the block and oil pump.

Some quick googling says there's no gasket between the oil pump and block, its a machined surface.
