Fellas..

Newish front gas tank. New sending unit 3yrs ago. Changed fuel filter, full of rusty junk. Pulled sending unit, totally rusted! About to pull and clean tank out and get new sending unit ($31 on ebay)

1. Anyone use an alternative screen instead of the prone to break off showerhead in tank filter?
2. What happened?? Maybe bad fuel (always Sams Club) that had water contamination caused all the rust?

Make sure the new sending unit matches your fuel gauge ohms. Ford used 10-73 ohms for the diesels, a lot of the gas ones are 16-158 ohms. Chevy is something like 0-90. Most of the sending units I've seen are 16-158 ohms.

Thanks for the info, they say it's for diesel but don't list the ohms, only $22

Well you lucked out. When I was dealing with all of my fuel issues a couple of years ago the cheapest I saw was $150+ for a diesel sender. I ended up switching everything to the 16-158 ohm senders because they were available and used Auto Meter gauges for my fuel level.

I have an efuel setup, so I am just running a piece of PEX tubing to the bottom of the tank instead of dealing with the filter/showerhead.

Look in here for your sending units and other fuel related stuff.
As said, the trucks are OHM specific depending on year.

I replaced both of mine on the 86 a well as the Shower heads several years ago (maybe 5).
The Shower Heads do have the screen on the bottom to catch stuff.
What`s the life of them? 10 yrs, 20 yts? Probably new one`s will last as long as the majority of the member have them, before moving on to newer stuff.

When I pulled the bed to swap in the new senders and Shower Heads, both tank were clean except for the broken Shower Heads laying in the bottom. No rust or dirt.

Most people don`t think about it, but the fuel is sucked off the bottom of the tank. It`s constantly being sloched around and churned.
Doesn`t sit in the tank like water in a Fish Bowl. Only when parked.
So my way of thinking, the screen is important.
If you are using your FSV, you don`t want anything to get jambed in it so it won`t select the tanks. Maybe a Filter before it if you modify things?

Great ideas.
This is what's incredible to me, I put this sending unit in 3yrs ago.. look how rusty! The inside of the tank was OK, except for rust off this and (3yr old) showerhead chunks floating around.

Check out the fuel water filter too. It's after the FSV unfortunately..

When i replaced the senders on the 86 6 yrs back, they were probably original, the top side was as rusty as your under side. There was no rust on the in tank parts. Wonder why yours are so rusty.
Looking at the top of your filter, looks like maybe algee problem? Haven`t seen one like that. and all I have owned since 81 is Diesels.

If you can use that filter thing on the pick up tube or install one before the FSV of decent size. Some use a hose on the end to sit on the tank bottom with a "V" cut into it.

I’m 90% certain that the ohms range on the sender/gauge is different on the bullnose trucks than it is on the brick/aero nose ones. I think the 10-73 ohms is only for the earlier trucks

Well, here's what I rigged up. Blowing through them they seem like they will flow an adequate amount of volume. That's $30/ft submersible hose and those filters have a very fine mesh screen for whatever little sediment I missed in the tank.
