The timing project didn't turn out too good, I've worked on this thing for couple days now the timing does not stay in place it varies by I'm not sure how many degrees but it's all over the place I didn't mention on this post about to crashing noise that the engine made yesterday. Yes I did. I think the problem maybe the harmonic balancer it's not real true I don't know what the tolerance can be on this but it's out of round. In other words if I was to put something in the probe hole and let it just touch the harmonic balancer then it would score it on the closest side...- trythis

I turn the engine over by hand with a ratchet it turned hard all the time whether it's too hard or not I don't know but I could only turn it a couple inches at a time. It did not seem to have a place that more drag then the other. Although I did not remove the glow plugs yet. KansasIDI the...- trythis

No I have not tried that. But I don't think it would be a rusty cylinder because I did have it running a couple times recently before I started trying to time it I didn't have noises like that. But I will give it a turn with the wrench tomorrow to see what kind of drag it has on it. I will pull...- trythis

Wow I say, what to do? Give you a little history on this truck I've had it since probably 1999. Rebuilt the engine in 2008 may have put 2000 miles on it since then. Well I did get the light to flash not sure that it's in the right time the knob on the back assume would be set to 0 and then I would look for 8.5° on the timing tab set me straight please if I don't have that right- trythis

Thank you I stuck a feeler gauge under to see about how far off the harmonic balancer I was and found there was some debris under or between the timing tab and the harmonic balancer, this truck has been sitting for a while. After that it started working but still not a steady read. I wonder if...- trythis
